Printer Cartridge

There are different Canon Printer models and also different ink cartridges for various models.
I use BCI-6 type of cartridges in my printer (Pixma 3000).
Are other Canon cartridges inter-changeable e.g BCI-3 etc.
Will the printer still operate.

I'v always bought inks specific to printer and never looked into whether or not they were interchangeable --- this page might throw some light though on your question though
