Apple-Bug- Space Starlink Experience (2023-02)

No doubt many members have heard me complain about the trials of living in a rural area (36k out of Brisbane) left behind in the communications field.

The NBN is not coming to our area which borders the Maiala National Park via a winding narrow road crossing the Creek at several points. The area has found itself in the “too hard basket”.

Because the area is sandwiched between two mountain ranges Sky Muster satellite service did not work - the locals tried it and gave up. The reason being the Sky Muster satellites are too high and not as numerous as the latest offering of Elon Musk’s Starlink which are more numerous and lower altitude than Sky Muster. Properties backing up to the range on the southern side of the road where the valley narrows — not easy, even with Starlink due to obstructions and clear sky is needed.

Apple-Bug: Apple Releases New MacBook Pro, Mac mini and Mac mini Pro (2023-02)

I know of a few Apple-Q members who have been waiting for Apple’s new M2 Pro & Max chips to be released and make their way into some new Macs. As they did with the M1 Max & Pro chips, it was expected that they would initially be placed within a new MacBook Pro. Many people were also waiting for a basic M2 version of the Mac mini. Well Apple released both of these (plus another big surprise) recently without any big Apple presentation (watch the announcement). The other big, unexpected announcement was an M2 Pro version of the Mac mini.

Apple-Bug: HowTo Mini: AirPrint- Printing from Your iPad/iPhone (2023-01)

It would be almost impossible to write an article showing how to set up AirPrint because, as it is with modems, there are many printers that each use different methods to configure this service.

I can however show you how to use AirPrint on your iPad/iPhone to print wirelessly to your AirPrint enabled printer.

Your printer has to support AirPrint, and have it enabled, to use this method. There was a paid app that I was a while ago that allowed your normal printer to use AirPrint. It installed it on a Mac which had a printer attached – so you had to keep the printer on all of the time.

So what do you need to do to print to your AirPrint enabled printer from your iPad/iPhone? [Full Version of this Tutorial Here]

Apple-Bug: Screenshot app on your Dock (2023-01)

Do those keyboard commands for taking a screenshot disappear out of your brain if you haven’t used them for a while?

Apple have made it a bit more user friendly by including Screenshot so that you can make an icon in your Dock (Monterey or Ventura).

Apple-Bug: Preserving Your Precious Information & Memories (2023-01)

I know that I have gone over this topic many times, but it is a topic that is vitally important to all users of computers. Just think for a moment - imagine that your computer suddenly lost all of its files due to some hardware fault and the data on there is the only copy that you have. Would you be able to get it all back by simply typing it back in or retaking all of your original photos and movies? - Almost certainly not.

Apple-Bug- Jude’s Findings (2023-01)

When we produced the Apple-Q Disk of the Month there was always a folder which contained web links that Judith Hall had sent to me via email. There were lots of interesting tidbits of interest to Jude, me, and other members. So here are some of the things that she has found in the last 2 months:

  • How to Use AirPods as Hearing Aids
  • Imagine a place where you trust your social network.
  • Could an Apple, Google Twitter dump prompt Tesla phone?
  • How does Starlink Satellite Internet Work
  • This macOS feature will streamline the way you manage and reformat files

Apple-Bug: New iPads (2022-11)

Apple has decided to simply sneak in a couple of new iPads rather than having an Apple Event to introduce them - there are two - the iPad (10th Gen) and the iPad Pro.

The new base model iPad has some nice additions like a new, faster A14 Bionic chip and TouchID for signing in & ApplePay. It also comes in four colours, has a 10.9 inch screen (up from10.2) with no notch at the top, and includes a USB-C connector instead of a Lightning. This latter is most likely due to the EU’s decision to make this connector standard on all new tech devices sold there. Though the connector has changed the communication speed has not been upgraded and is still USB2 speed.

The new appearance is basically due to the new version of iPadOS 16 so overall it has a nice new look and feel but not really ground-breaking.

Apple-Bug: Should you update to Apple Ventura? (2022-11)

Apple finally released macOS Ventura (13) this month after a few unexpected delays due to last minute bugs being found by the Beta Testers and Developers.

There are many significant changes from macOS 12 and many members have made comments that it is “a lot different”. As with any new operating system I usually try to delay updating for a couple of weeks to see what problems Mac users from around the world have experienced.

The other reason that I delay is to see what updates there are for the various hardware devices and software that I use. For my Mac I usually install the new version of macOS on a separate external drive and use Migration Assistant to transfer my ‘stuff’. I then boot from that and see what no longer works with the new system. After using this for a couple of weeks I then either update the main startup drive to the new system or, more usually, use SuperDuper! to clone the external drive back to my main startup drive.

I am rather paranoid and create a full cloned image of my main startup drive before I do anything to it. So if some major problem is detected after using the new macOS version for a while, I can easily revert back to the previous version.

I have created various Apple-Q HowTo Tutorials on macOS System Installation and using SuperDuper! to clone and backup your drives.

Apple-Bug: HowTo (Mini): iPhone/iPad- Backup & Sync for Big Sur & Above (2022-11)

This is a cut-down version of my most recent HowTo Tutorial. Steps have been condensed and images either reduced or not included. The full version is available on the Apple-Q-Core.

With the demise of iTunes you now have to use the Finder if you wish to Backup or Sync your iPhone or iPad to your Mac. This is almost identical to when iTunes was used, the interface is the same, you simply click on your device in the Finder Sidebar instead. So now it is actually faster and easier as you no longer have to work through iTunes to perform these tasks.

Apple-Bug: HowTo (Mini): Disk Utility- First Aid (Mac)(2022-11)

The First Aid section of Disk Utility can be used to check the health of your Mac drive (both the device & its volume). It does not need to be run on a regular basis but simply used when you suspect something may be wrong. Your drive (or files on it) may be giving errors, taking a long time to load, or startup. These problems may be due to other things but it is always good to be able to discount the drive as being the problem. In this tutorial I am using macOS Mojave (10.14). There is an older version of this tutorial Apple-Q HowTo- Disk Utility- First Aid (MacOS 10.11+). Here is how...

Apple-Bug: TextEdit: Copy Finder File/Folder Names into Text (2022-08)

I have often needed to copy the names of multiple files within a Finder window into a text file. An example of this is copying the names of Apple-Q HowTo Tutorials into an Apple-Bug article or another HowTo Tutorial so that I may link or reference it.

Icon
Apple-Bug: Apple-Q HowTo Tutorials (2022-08)

There are around 400 Apple-Q HowTo Tutorial available to all Apple-Q Members. In the beginning, before any HowTo Tutorials even existed, I used to create a long email or text document (with screenshots) every time that a member asked me for a detailed step- by-step explanation on how to solve a problem that they had with their Mac. However I soon found that many members were often contacting me with the same problems.

This was even worse when members asked me to describe what to do over the phone without me being able to see their Mac. I often found myself trying to describe what they should be seeing on their screen and what to do next. I soon refined the help documents that I send members to include a large screenshot to go with each simple step that I gave them.

I then started to search back through my emails to members trying to find where I had previously sent a member a help email on a given topic in order to send that to another member who was asking the same questions. I found this very hit-and-miss and it was often faster to recreate it from scratch.

So I started to use LibreOffice to create these help instructions and save them within a single folder (with a descriptive titles to help me locate them in the future). So I would just send members who asked the PDF version of the file on How To solve their problem. These later gained the title ‘Apple-Q HowTo Tutorials’.

The trouble with the evolving way that these tutorials came about was that many of the early versions did not have a consistent structure, design, or layout. Also many of the links to external information became defunct or no longer relevant. One example of this was where I stored them. Initially I saved them on my personal

web server and sent out links to these tutorials to members. Later I started to use a great ebook app called calibre to organise and create a separate web site for them. A few years back this site was finally placed within a sub-domain of the apple-q.org.au site (core.apple- q.org.au).

Apple-Bug: macOS Ventura Public Beta Released (2022-07)

Apple-Q is a Be Connected Network Partner. They offer some great training tutorials as well. Read the Join Be Connected article in this issue.

Apple has released the Public Beta version of Ventura - its new version of macOS. Everyone is free to download and use it however, since it is a pre-release version, it will still have bugs and may cause problems. If you wish to try it out I recommend that you install it on a seperate drive that way you leave your current system untouched in case something goes wrong.

You will also need to enrol in Apple’s Beta Testing Program (see the details here). A feedback app is also installed on your Mac that sends back error messages to Apple which allows them to fix them.
